Chapter 3 Vocabulary

3.1

Construct - Don't rely on measurements from protractor or ruler; you use only a compass and straightedge.

Draw - Carefully and accurately make a triangle using your protractor and ruler.

Duplicate - To copy using construction tools.

Sketch - Use freehand to draw a triangle; Don't need geometry tools.

3.2

Segment Bisector - A line, ray, or segment that passes through the midpoint of a segment.

Median - The segment connecting the vertex of a triangle and the midpoint of its opposite side.

Midsegment - The segment that connects the midpoints of two sides of a triangle.

Perpendicular Bisector - A segment bisector that is also perpendicular to the segment (a plane has only one).

3.3

Altitude - A segment from a vertex to the opposite side or to a line containing the opposite side that intersects it at a ninety degree angle ; its for a triangle.

Distance from a point to a line - This length is understood to be the length of the perpendicular segment from the point to the line; this is the shortest distance.
